Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
